Treatment algorithms help clinicians to select rational treatments for the relief of pain. A treatment algorithm for neuropathic pain (Diabetic and postherpetic neuropathic pain) is available.
Neuropathic pain
Neuropathic pain is an important component of many chronic pain conditions and is caused by drug, disease, or injury-induced damage or dysfunction in the nervous system37. It is characterised by a burning, cold, or an electrical shooting sensation and can also be associated with tingling, pins and needles, numbness and itching38.
A useful treatment algorithm for neuropathic pain can be located in Appendix 4.
