SUMMARY: PAIN TREATMENT

The major focus of managing patients with persistent pain should be on improving function (physical, psychological and social) and minimising distress. Encouraging self-management and setting realistic expectations is critical in achieving success. Effective management entails a multidisciplinary approach utilising pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods that address physical, psychological and psychosocial aspects of pain. A written treatment plan should be developed in consultation with the patient, and pain management team, with regular review and modification as required.
