MULTIDISCIPLINARY PAIN CENTRES

When to refer to a multidisciplinary pain centre

GPs may consider referral to a pain centre when3:

  • A trial of opioids fails to provide pain relief
  • The patient fails to improve in function
  • The patient has difficult-to-control neuropathic pain
  • A satisfactory diagnosis can not be reached
  • There are complex psychosocial influences
  • Pain is accompanied by a history of medication misuse.
