When to refer to a multidisciplinary pain centre
GPs may consider referral to a pain centre when3:
- A trial of opioids fails to provide pain relief
- The patient fails to improve in function
- The patient has difficult-to-control neuropathic pain
- A satisfactory diagnosis can not be reached
- There are complex psychosocial influences
- Pain is accompanied by a history of medication misuse.
